Unanimous Acquittal at Isleworth Crown Court

Imran Khan & Partners is delighted to report that our client, FA, has been unanimously acquitted by a jury at Isleworth Crown Court of inflicting grievous bodily harm, contrary to section 20 of the Offences Against the Person Act 1861.

FA, a twenty-three-year-old British Somali man, gave evidence in his own defence during a trial lasting five days. He told the jury that he had been misidentified and was not the person responsible for causing the injuries. The jury returned its verdict after only fifteen minutes of deliberation.

The defence was conducted by Niall Shiels, a solicitor in our criminal defence team, working alongside trial counsel Anna Renou of Mountford Chambers.

Preparation as the foundation of justice

Verdicts of this kind are rarely won in the courtroom alone. They are built in the weeks and months beforehand, through meticulous scrutiny of the prosecution case, careful testing of the evidence, and a close working relationship between solicitor and counsel. In this case, Niall and Anna worked hand in hand throughout, ensuring that every aspect of the defence was thoroughly prepared before the jury ever heard it.

Identification evidence demands particular care. The courts have long recognised that an honest witness may nonetheless be a mistaken one, and that a confident identification is not necessarily an accurate one. It is the task of the defence to ensure that such evidence is properly examined, and that a jury is equipped to assess it with the caution it requires.

Empathy as well as expertise

This case also highlights something that cannot be found in any bundle of papers: empathy and understanding for the person at the centre of the proceedings. FA is a young man with his life ahead of him. Had he been convicted of this offence, the consequences would have been catastrophic for his liberty, his future and his standing in his community. Throughout, our team never lost sight of what was at stake for him.

We congratulate Niall and Anna on an outstanding result, and we are pleased that FA can now move forward with his life.
