David Norris, one of the two men convicted of the murder of teenager Stephen Lawrence in 1993, has for the first time admitted taking part in the attack. Norris, giving evidence by video link during his public parole hearing, said he punched Stephen but refused to identify the other members of the gang involved. His appearance comes 13 years after he and Gary Dobson were found guilty and sentenced to life imprisonment.

The hearing included a statement from Baroness Doreen Lawrence, read by her solicitor Imran Khan KC, who represented the Lawrence family throughout their decades-long campaign for justice. Baroness Lawrence said Norris “killed my son in the most brutal and callous fashion” and remains a danger to the public, pointing to his continued use of racist language in prison and his refusal to show genuine remorse.

The Parole Board will decide later this month whether Norris should be released on licence or remain in custody.
