School Exclusion Appeal

We acted for Y, a 14 year old Black boy who had been excluded from his school in East London, following an altercation with another student.
He had no history of violence, and had an excellent school record, including being in the top set of his year group for multiple subjects.
IKP argued that the exclusion was disproportionate and procedurally unfair. The decision to exclude had also not taken into account that Y's brother had been subject to bullying by the other student. The Headteacher had made the decision to exclude Y without considering other alternatives such as a directed placement or a managed move.
We were instructed four days before the hearing in front of the Discipline Hearing Panel. We made urgent representations to the Headteacher, and she rescinded the exclusion shortly before the Panel was convened, and arranged for a managed move.
Y can now continue his education in mainstream schooling and pursue his dream career of being a doctor without a mark of expulsion on his record.
