Imran Khan KC delivered opening statements to the Undercover Policing Inquiry (Tranche 3 – Phase 1) on behalf of the Blacklist Support Group and Baroness Doreen Lawrence. He set out how “policing by consent” has been eroded for Black communities, detailing surveillance of community justice groups including The Monitoring Group and trade union activists. He invited the Inquiry to address institutional racism within covert policing and its impact on families and campaigners.
He also delivered an opening statement on behalf of Michael Mansfield KC, rejecting the police narrative that surveillance of the Lawrence campaign and allied groups was merely “collateral.” The statement called for full candour and accountability and urged the Inquiry to make clear findings on institutional racism within covert policing.
