We have written to the Deputy Prime Minister and Justice Secretary, David Lammy, raising urgent concerns about remand prisoners who are on prolonged hunger strike while awaiting trial for alleged Palestine Action-related offences.

In the letter, we warn that there is a “real and increasingly likely potential” that these individuals could die in custody if immediate steps are not taken. Several of the defendants have refused food for more than 30 days, with some now approaching 40 days without eating. Five have already been hospitalised.

The defendants deny the charges against them and argue they have been denied bail and are not receiving a fair process. Their protest also includes objections to the ban on Palestine Action, which is currently being reviewed by the High Court.

We have requested an urgent meeting with ministers to address the situation and safeguard the health and human rights of the detainees.
