Imran Khan KC has written an article for Legal Action Group examining why racism continues to persist in UK prisons, despite the lessons that should have been learned from past tragedies.

In the article, titled 'Have we learned nothing?', he reflects on the shocking similarities between the 2020 killing of Sundeep Ghuman in HMP Belmarsh and the murder of Zahid Mubarek in 2000. Imran Khan KC, who acted in the landmark Mubarek Inquiry, questions why the safeguards and systems introduced after that inquiry have failed to prevent another racially motivated death in custody.

He also raises concerns about the current political climate and rhetoric around crime and punishment, suggesting that it has contributed to a weakening of protections for vulnerable people in state detention.
