Daniel Cooper, Partner at Imran Khan & Partners, appeared on ITV News to discuss the legal action being brought against Lambeth Council on behalf of survivors of abuse at the Melting Pot children’s home.
The case centres on allegations of sexual abuse, torture, and false imprisonment suffered by those placed in the home.
Speaking to ITV News, Daniel highlighted the Council’s alleged systemic failures to protect vulnerable children in its care. He also emphasised the importance of accountability and justice for the women affected:
“Our courageous clients are starting this case to secure justice and accountability for the appalling and life changing sexual abuse, torture, and false imprisonment they suffered at the Melting Pot children’s home.
Melting Pot children’s home appears to have been a home in which black children were dumped and forgotten, rather than cared for and nurtured as they so desperately needed.
Our clients understand that Lambeth Council was involved in the operational running of Melting Pot, that it was funded by Lambeth Council, and in some cases Lambeth Council placed children in the Melting Pot.
Lambeth social workers were supposed to be caring for children while they were at the Melting Pot. The duties they owed to those young people included a duty to protect them from physical and psychiatric damage, to monitor their welfare, to visit them and ascertain their views, wishes, anxieties and complaints, to ensure they were adequately educated, to ascertain whether they were at risk of harm from the staff at the Melting Pot, and, in the event of such risk, to protect and/or remove them.
Our clients believe Lambeth Council fundamentally failed in their duties and turned a blind eye to the horrendous abuse they experienced.
Lambeth Council have previously stated that they will deal with these cases sensitively and provide resolution, and we hope they will do so for the women of the Melting Pot”.
