On 8 May 2025, the Court of Appeal heard the case of Louis De Zoysa, who was convicted in July 2023 and sentenced to a whole-life order.
Imran Khan and Partners have been instructed to act on behalf of Mr De Zoysa in this matter. The appeal focused on two primary grounds: the fitness of Mr De Zoysa to plead and stand trial, and the appropriateness of the whole-life order sentence imposed.
Imran Khan KC, representing De Zoysa, who has been diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder, said in written submissions: “The judge fell into error in finding that the applicant was fit to plead (and) to be tried. He was not.”
Addressing the sentence, he continued: “This case, looking at it in the round, is not one which by any stretch of the imagination falls anywhere near the evil end of the spectrum and therefore we say it should not have been a whole life order.”
Imran Khan and Partners continues to represent Mr De Zoysa and will review the forthcoming written judgment to determine any further legal steps.
