Imran Khan KC has written an opinion piece for The Guardian warning that the right to protest in Britain is under threat as the government reviews public order and hate-crime legislation.

He has raised concerns that protest laws are applied unevenly, with racialised groups facing disproportionate policing and restrictions. He points to recent demonstrations, where peaceful assembly has increasingly been treated as a public order risk.

Imran also warns against proposals to restrict protest based on its cumulative impact, arguing that sustained protest has historically been essential to achieving social change, from the women’s suffrage movement to civil rights. He further cautions that limiting this persistence risks turning free expression from a protected right into a matter of political permission.
