The proceedings arose from events at Manchester Airport on 23 July 2024. The indictment contained four counts: count 1, assault by beating on Abdulkareem Hamzah Abbas Ismaeil; count 2, assault occasioning actual bodily harm on PC Zachary Marsden, which also involved co-defendant Muhammed Amaad; count 3, assault occasioning actual bodily harm on PC Lydia Ward; and count 4, assault on emergency worker PC Ellie Cook.https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cd0px74kznxo

The first trial, which took place at Liverpool Crown Court in July 2025, lasted about 23 days and resulted in guilty verdicts on counts 1, 3 and 4, with no verdict on count 2.

Count 2 was retried this year, again at Liverpool Crown Court. The retrial jury was also unable to reach a verdict on that count. On 29 May 2026, the prosecution offered no evidence on count 2 and the court directed a not guilty verdict on that count.

On 26 June 2026, Mr Amaaz was sentenced to a total of 42 months' imprisonment by HHJ Flewitt.

An application for leave to appeal against sentence was considered by a single judge. On 14 August 2026, the single judge refused leave to appeal sentence. The application was then renewed to the full court.

The oral hearing for renewal of leave to appeal sentence is listed for Friday 16 October 2026.

Imran Khan KC will be acting for Mr Amaaz together with Ms Chloe Gardner and Ms Danielle Buckett of Nexus Chambers: https://nexuschambers.com/
